The Werewolf, Seven

October 30th, 2009 by Mao

Evangeline lay in the clearing, Virgil’s unconscious form resting against her legs. He just dropped over, without warning, clutching at his head. It had taken a considerable amount of fighting, but finally–and with Ylva’s help–Reyes was convinced it wasn’t Evangeline’s doing. Now they were scouting, trying to figure out if something had tried to attack from afar.

It wasn’t the wisest of moves, leaving the two unguarded, but Evangeline refused to leave. Even when Reyes got angry, she was unmoved. Ylva finally managed to drag him away, leaving the two to the peace and quiet of the forest.

Evangeline knew they had nothing to fear from the outside. There was something inside that plagued Virgil. She’d seen the signs since they had met, right down to him talking aloud to nothing. This seemed different somehow, more violent. Usually he dropped quietly and fell into a sleep.

This time, his eyes were open, his face frozen. His chest rose and fell with shallow breaths, but there was no recognition in his eyes, in his face. He was somewhere else, somewhere very far away.

Something had stopped him from returning after Death had ejected him. It was a violent motion, one that rocked him to his core. He thought he had met his match with Death, but he didn’t know there were others with their share of powers. He was standing on a beach, but not just any beach. Everything was dulled somehow. He could feel the slightest thrum of energy and even it seemed to lack cohesion. What was this place?

A figure stood in the waves, its back to him. Whatever it was, it drew him like a moth to a flame, his feet propelled to move forward despite his frantic attempts to stop.

The slow, meandering pace was almost unbearable. Virgil was forced to watch his body move without any control of his own. He could feel the influence like a warm heat in his head, clutching his brain like fingers, moving his nerve endings like puppet strings tied to a cross.

Whatever this was, it was strong. From Death to this, his poor mind could hardly stand it. How much more until it was over?

omg what has happened to Valerie? Is she trying to take responsibility for this? Whatever it is. Is that a dream or a vision?

what is it that Eva has done? I cannot imagine her intending destruction. And Death doesn’t seem to be awfully concerned about the fact that she ran off; she’s more concerned about Virgil. Which is interesting.

So he’s not a hero. I’d like to know her definition. He’s determined to do what he thinks is the right thing even if it means self sacrifice. I can’t think of a more powerful definition of hero.

Your shots of the beach and Valerie are some of the most stunning I have ever, ever seen. The world looks bleached of life and color. Astonishing writing, clean and spare, and gorgeous, gorgeous shots!

Valerie’s power has grown exponentially since Wings of Steel. That was a place of her own creation resembling somewhere she’s been. She pulled Virgil there. Her burden was Evangeline and Death’s secret… we’ll find more out about the entirety of the situation in the next chapter. It’s not as simple as it seems. Death was making sure Virgil was prepared. Death is never, ever as it appears and is a hell of a lot more manipulative than most realize. Virgil has been all about saving his own skin since day one, so it was making sure he was in it to win it before trusting him. This was his decision, essentially, become a werewolf and stay with Evangeline or leave her and retain what he is now. I’m so glad you liked them and the effect came off! It was supposed to denote that it wasn’t completely real. :) Thank you!

I don’t know if I should be relieved that Valerie has decided to take some of everyone else’s burdens off her shoulders, or be terrified that now some of those secrets are going to be revealed.

And Death knows how to seize a moment, but I guess that Death’s job, to make sure people make the deals it wants them too.

That is a definite problem, all the secrets coming out… she’s carried a large burden for a long time. Haha, such is the way of Death, you’re right.

Noooo! Valerie hasn’t just given up has she, not after everything she’s been through? Clever use of the beach by the way, as I remember that Val was usually on the beach in WoS when she had visions/mind meetings – and I still remember the sun breaking into fragments in one of those scenes :)

I hope Virgil really can handle being a complete werewolf, and whatever’s about to kick off ….

All up to date now, and even though it took a while to get around to reading it was more than worth the wait :)

Tanya! I am so glad you made that connection, even my HUSBAND didn’t get it! You’ve made my night, thank you. That is completely, completely it. She hasn’t given up, but she’s badly wounded. She’s afraid she won’t make it and she can’t bear the burden anymore, she can’t hurt Christian or Evangeline anymore with the secrecy. Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it and it’s definitely great to have you back. :D

Poor Eva. She just can’t win can she? Without her memories she’s lost, with them she’s feeling equally horrible.
Poor Valerie too. She’s come a long way from that little girl in KiD! That beach was so different to the one where she trained with Sanctus Unus, all stark and dead, /shudder.
I must’ve said this before, but I <3 Death. Crazy, manipulative and redheaded! My type of girl!

Evangeline is kind of damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. It’s just another one of those constantly disputed things–better to bask in ignorance or know everything, even the bad? Crappy way of putting it but my brain is wonky today. Hahaha, Death is certainly Death.

    Holy crow, Mao.
I think everyone is about to have their very foundations shaken to the core.

And Valerie has become so powerful it’s scary. I wonder though if now that she’s gotten the burden off of her will she live to even see Evangeline again.

That is an excellent question! We still need to check in on Valerie, see how she’s doing outside of her head. ;) Everyone is getting the rugged pulled out from under them, everyone. It’s only just begun!

    :o Holy Cow!
    I’m speechless….
It looks like Valerie just decided to start the inevitable…

Whatever is about to happen was supposed to happen sooner or later, we can’t keep a secret forever… but Valerie, was it really the time and the way to do it?
I mean… Poor Evangeline now she is even more confused and lonely than before…
and now That Eva Knows what she is capable of, she can even become more dangerous than before… if she falls in Eckhard hands we all be doom!!!

I don’t know how Christian will react to the fact that Valerie knew Death was Beryl and she didn’t tell him…

I’m afraid of him…he might even go against Sanctus Unus…(LOL Sorry I’m just letting my imagination go wild)

Wonderful shots and incredible writing as always… I’m sooo looking forward to next chapter!!!

Valerie just kick-started something with far-reaching effects even she isn’t aware of. Either way, Evangeline was going to find out and it was going to be bad. So, it was like ripping off a band-aid, might as well get it done and over with. Christian will not be happy. At all. But we’ve got some time before that actually happens. ;) Christian has already gone against Sanctus Unus, he did that when he tried to save Beryl from her fate back in Wings of Steel. It was kind of what led him here, unfortunately. Losing Evangeline was just the final nail in the coffin. Thanks, Sandy!

I had to read this twice. I feel so bad for Valerie. It seems as if she has been pulled apart thread by thread. And Eva…I hope the full force of her memories will eventually settle and she will be able to accept whatever her role is going to be going forward. I have a feeling this revelation will have far reaching consequences.

I am really looking forward to Virgil now that he has made his decision.

Gah! I am not leaving a very coherent comment. I’m exhausted…

No worries, Gayl! I’m just glad it all made sense in the end. Valerie has definitely opened a can of worms and even she doesn’t realize the complete weight of it! She’s suffered a lot, though, all the secrecy and everything. A very heavy burden to carry.

    Val! Val found Virgil *bounces*
What what? what?! VAL! *screams* no no no omg omg omg!!
wait okay for one thing … I thought Death didnt want EVangeline to remember.. or maybe just about her connection to the form Death now has .. *boggles* i.am.confused.
    oh golly, poor Eva
What does he think Death can do about this? o.O on the other hand … who else would he call?
Ah! So thats his plan eh? Hmm…
holy boop. I got chills Mao!! *squeals and bounces*
Good luck with NaNo. I know you’ll do awesome.

Haha, it’s okay, Ruby. I didn’t really clarify what Evangeline found out in its entirety. We’re getting to that. I will tell you one thing, though. Evangeline will never, ever know who her mother is. That’s just an explicit understanding between everyone. It’s for the best, truly. Thank you, Ruby! :D

  9. Fini

Late comment, but lots of stuff happening as of late.

Ha. I actually figured it out on the early side that it was Valerie. If she could help restore Eva’s memories, I wonder why she waited. Maybe she wanted to protect her?

Poor Eva. Lashing out is hardly the best thing to do, and running away is even worse. She could be running straight into Eckhard’s arms. I somehow think that with Reyes and Ylva, she could at least get away from him, if not outright fight him. And going to him is the last thing she wants to do.

And Virgil decides to take the leap. Despite the hard-on sarcasm mode, I can imagine that taking that jump for Eva’s sake pleases Death in some way.

NaNo month is a busy time, Fini! No worries. I’m in the same boat, trying to row without a paddle right next to you, LOL! We have to remember that what happened to Evangeline involves whatever deal was struck between Sanctus Unus and Evangeline. No worries, the next chapter should shed some light on that, finally! Evangeline is definitely having a moment and not thinking clearly. Hopefully Virgil can find her before anything shifty happens. Death is pleased, in its own, strange way.

The relationship between Eva and Virgil is starting to look like you and me against the world, and it’s such a sweet, tender thing at the moment. Your slow development of it has been very effective.

Nice to see Valerie again. Everyone has new burdens and so much more at stake this time around.

I was afraid that in learning her powers Eva had somehow caused the earthquake. Poor girl, to have done that and almost destroyed herself in the process. Too much burden for one so young, but that seems to be the norm in Santus Unus’ world.

I love your world, as you know. It’s so intricate and well woven.

Thanks, Lachesis. Evangeline and Virgil’s friendship is definitely a slow moving vehicle, but it gets where it needs to go. I’m not a big believer in people who are BFFs or completely in love after twenty four hours, haha. As for the earthquake, it was no accident.

*grumble* something happened to my comment, I will have to try again, too bad, it was really quite profound…

I am almost there. This has been, quite the trip. I will admit, I have not read the previous parts before AoL, but I did check out the summaries and characters, so my knowledge of your world may lack something, though, I love that you refer to past events as this story moves along.

Death is like an Eggo waffle, always popping up. And Virgil, a deal with death, not good. I have a bad feeling about this.
Wonderful shots on the beach, Valerie’s pain was wrenching to observe.
    And Eva, man. Confusion city.
Hope to be all caught up next week.
    Rich, dense world. Great stuff.

Sorry about that, Drew! I don’t know why that would happen–wordpress doens’t usually eat comments. :( Not reading previous parts will cause you to lose some affection for old characters, but you’ll conversely be more attached to the new ones, LOL! So I guess it works out. Some of the world stuff might confuse you though, but hopefully not to badly.

    Thanks for reading!
